Carl Frederich Gauss

Gauss became internationally famous as a result of his calculations that “recovered” the asteroid Ceres in 1801. His methods for computing the orbits of celestial objects remain in use today. We will describe how astronomers compute orbits using Gauss’ work as the primary example.
